Meet your Hosts
Garden Route Trail is a family run nature guiding business

Monz and Mark

Outdoors is our Passion

Mark started Garden Route Trail in May 2004 and Amanda joined in 2007. Together, as a husband and wife team, they offer guiding, logistics and catering for nature tours in the Garden Route and Southern Africa.

Both Mark and Amanda have extensive background in ecology and the environment, both as guides and field researchers.

Mark Dixon

Mark, a qualified marine biologist, has worked in environmental positions globally as CCAMLR Scientific Observer in the Ross Sea, Antarctica, and on a Jaguar Project with Conservation International in the Pantanal, Brazil.

An avid hiker, Mark has hiked in the USA and Canadian Rockies, the Chilean, Bolivian and Peruvian Andes, Nepalese Himalaya's, New Zealand Alps as well as the Drakensberg, Swartberg and Outeniqua mountain ranges.

An astute naturalist and an active field researcher (ornithologist, marine biologist and ichnologist), Mark informs guests with a mixture of scientific information and personal observations.

In addition to hiking, mountain biking and birding, Mark also has initiated the Strandloper Project to research ghost fishing from snagged recreational fishing tackle in the Garden Route.

Amanda Dixon

Amanda has conducted research on Morlet's Crocodile for 2 years in Belize and was a Big Five field guide with CC Africa (now And Beyond) at Phinda Nature Reserve in KwaZulu Natal.

Together with Mark, Amanda has consulted as an avifaunal expert on pre and post construction wind farm sites in the Western, Northern and Eastern Cape.

Currently they are conducting an avian research project to identify indicator bird species in habitat transformation.

Amanda is also an event coordinator for two festivals and various sporting events.
