Remote Coastline.
The shoreline of the Eastern Cape between Port Elizabeth and East London is renowned for it's rugged beauty and sparse development. The Shipwreck Trail, starting in Port Alfred and finishing at the Great Fish River showcases some of the best sections of this coastline.
Drawing on a prolonged history of maritime misfortune for it's name, the Shipwreck Trail is a balanced mix of beach, dune and riverine thicket to retain hikers interest on the standard six day itinerary.

A River Runs Through It.
Definitely one of the highlights of this trail is the canoe stage to and from the Nyala Nature Reserve on the Kleinemonde West river. Dense Albany Thicket shroud the river banks and the lower reaches boast four pairs of African Fish Eagles as well as a host of waterfowl feeding and fishing in the shallow sections as you paddle past them.

Birding Break.
One of the highlights of the Shipwreck Trail, especially in late autumn, is the chance to see an immature Crowned Eagle en route to the second nights accommodation. For avid birders, there are plenty opportunities on the inland sections of the trail to get in some rewarding birding.
All Inclusive.
Garden Route Trail offers and all inclusive guided and catered option for the Shipwreck Trail. We will oversee the booking, logistics and menu planning, leaving you free to simply arrive, lace up your hiking shoes and explore the wonders of this trail.

Trail Format.
Our standard trail format is a journey experience, moving to a new venue each night. We are able to tweak the itinerary to highlight some of the more spectacular sections of the standard trail.
While the accommodation is basic, it is comfortable, however, if this is a deterrent to guests, we can arrange a higher level of accommodation as an alternative.
