Garden Route Fynbos Walks
Explore the Cape Floral Kingdom in the Garden Route.

 

As part of the Cape Floral Kingdom of the Western Cape, the Garden Route has a selection of both mountain and dune Fynbos with some superb trails. Fynbos has evolved as fire climax vegetation and has adapted to flower during the late summer and winter months with floral displays between February and late November. Join us on a guided walk to learn more about this unique botanical system, the smallest of the global floral kingdoms.

Tierkop Trail

This trail is a mountain hike on the southern slopes of the Outeniqa Mountains and passes through a wide range of Fynbos species and offers some superb vistas along the mountain range.

Part of the route traverses reserve managed by Cape Nature and is declared a World Heritage Site to protect Fynbos diversity.

There are two distance options, namely a 12km and a 18km loop with a walking duration of 2.5 and 4.5 hours respectively.

The route climbs from 220m above sea level to 760m above sea level and can encounter a cloud base from 500m.

Equipment : Sturdy walking shoes, day pack, water and snacks, all weather outer shell and optional walking poles. Sunhat, sunscreen and sunglasses.

There are two water points on the route.

Dune Mole Rat Trail

A short to medium distance walk through dune Fynbos in the heart of the coastal lake system of the Garden Route with cammanding views of Rondevlei and Swartvlei.

The trail traverses the Rondeveli section of the Garden Route National Park and is situated between Sedgefield and Wilderness.

There are three loops which offer distances of 6km, 8km and 11km options.

The trails are undulating on firm sandy tracks with reinforced stairs on the steep sections.

Blombos Trail

An iconic dune Fynbos trail through the Goukamma Nature Reserve, Passing through and undulating dune system, the fynbos was recently burnt in the wildfires of June 7th 2017 and will be spectacular as it regenerates in the coming years.

The Blombis Trail is an iconic Fynbos Trail in the Goukamma Nature Reserve. It is a 14km unidirectional trail between the Goukamma River and Lake Pleasent east of Sedgefield. It can be walked in either direction, but is best walked ina westerly direction.
